Dan Pink talking about motivation
Ever been tempted to assume that bonuses make people’s work better? You may have seen the animation from Dan Pink but here’s the man himself, talking about the puzzle of human motivation at a TED talk in 2009
It is worth saying one more time: as soon as a task involves even rudimentary cognitive skill, increasing rewards makes people less capable. This doesn’t mean you can’t reward people, but it does mean that you should think extremely carefully about how those rewards will affect the minds of the people you give them to. Pink concludes that Autonomy, Mastery and Purpose are the three main intrinsic rewards that work should provide – we suggest that you need to unpack that idea a little further to make an operational system for understanding who needs what to feel motivated, which is why WeThrive has sixteen domains in the 4C model.
